DOWRY SYSTEM In todayââ¬â¢s society our beliefs are different than they were during the Elizabethan era. Today, people believe that we live in golden ages and were better of now than we ever were. There are many facts that could prove that belief wrong. Take for example the dowry system. It was designed to provide the newly weds with security and basic needs. Todayââ¬â¢s society and especially western one would say that this system was cold and demeaning to women. I think that there is nothing cold and demeaning about it, and I also know plenty of people who wished they had dowry system before they got married. One of those people is my wife which I completely agree with since I know what we went thru. Not only were we living in a foreign country but also we were broke and our parents didnââ¬â¢t support us. On top of all that we wanted to get married with nothing else but love. Oh how I wish we had some kind of dowry system, how many problems would have been solved and how much time would have been saved. But hey everyone deserves a lesson in life and we learned ours. Love is not enough to get married on. Love has to be a part of something bigger to work otherwise that love will end. Thatââ¬â¢s why I think that we as society should create some kind of dowry system in order to make our marriages work. We need something that will end the divorce and secure the relationships. I propose that we make a mandatory law that says all people regardless of sex, race, or religion have to open a special account at age 14 and the account has to be open for at least 4 years. During those 4 years the state must take out 5 % of your paycheck either yours or your parents/guardian regardless of what kind of income it is. You canââ¬â¢t touch the money until youââ¬â¢re married and no special circumstances or special treatment for anyone, and if neither you nor your parents have any income you shouldnââ¬â¢t marry until you do. Educating immigrant students Essay A Study Critic of ââ¬Å"Made in America: Immigrant students in our pubic schoolsâ⬠The dispute over sending immigrant students into public schools in the United States has continued to separate Americans. Its proponents advance the educational rights of qualified foreign students who have left their respective countries and faced being ââ¬Å"Americanizedâ⬠just to be able to learn American civilization as their second culture. Those opposing the system, however, argue that the white Americans should still be the priority since immigrant students are only second rate compared to them despite the immigrants earnest efforts to fit into the American society. It was also stressed that in order to be a part of the real American community, the immigrant students must set aside their native cultures and be ready to be customized as a true-blooded American. In so doing, however, it would be inevitable to expose problems or issues related to educating immigrant students. These include their differences with the Native Americans and hardships in allowing themselves to be made as American citizens. In addition, educating immigrant students in the U. S. present bigger issues such as racial discrimination, cross-cultural conflict and unfair learning system which are detrimental to the overall personality of an immigrant student. The problems mentioned above are what the book, ââ¬Å"Made in America: Immigrant students in our pubic schoolsâ⬠by Laurie Olsen, has accurately presented. A qualitative study book that looks into the system of educating immigrant students in American public schools, it is a concrete proof that such problems and conflicts indeed exist. It is good to note, however, that the system is still salvageable. All it needs is honest to goodness solid training of teachers, additional support programs for the immigrant students and ultimately, an environment that allows them to keep to their native cultures while at the same time keeping at par with their white American classmates (Olsen, 1997). An Overview of the Study. The 1997 study book by Olsen is a survey on the lives of the immigrant students who are being educated and Americanized in an urban high school institution. It likewise presents the relationships of the immigrants with their teachers who are responsible for the immigrants learning program and Native American classmates who pose a challenge into their goal to adapt the American culture. The study was presented under a circumstance that the students with varying cultures are studying in a California high school wherein the promise and challenge of diversity are significantly increasing in a multinational society. Relative to the above composition, Olsen (1997) further noted the apparent positioning or mapping of students according to their races. Upon arrival in Madison High, new immigrant students are correctly placed or positioned to their respective racial structures. Based from these racial maps, Olsen (1999) learned the various indicators or factors that led foreign students to study in Madison High and their corresponding implications. The study then proceeded by asking the students the reasons why they chose to study in the U. S. and what prompted them to study the English language and eventually adapt the American culture or be Americanized. Thereafter, the research also unveiled that the white Americans actually perceive that the system rob them of opportunities which they believe are for them. They blatantly expressed that immigrant students take away their chances of having a good quality of education and eventually getting a good job. In the end, Olsen (1999) summarized her study by recognizing that new immigrant students undergo the Americanization process based on theoretical classifications, the need to speak fluent English against all odds, requirement to surrender their local dialect so that one can be involved in Madison Highs academic and cultural life, and repetitive force to have a place in the American racial map (Olsen, 1997). Analysis of the Study Olsens study showed immigrant students tales which are abundant with sociological items and which have enabled the readers the chance to look into the challenges of studying in an escalating diverse society. The research has proven to be a very rich material for Olsen to come up with her study book. Holocaust Essay One of the worldââ¬â¢s greatest events in the twentieth century was the Holocaust. This event was tragic and dreadful to all, deceased and alive, Jews. Between January 30, 1933 and May 8, 1945, over six million Jews were tortured then killed without having a say. Having to live day by day with this terrifying experience hammered in their minds, roughly three million Jews were blessed with survival. ââ¬Å"Only be careful and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen, or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.â⬠-Deuteronomy 4:9 From the Holocaust we learn that feelings are important aspects of our daily lives. We must protect ourselves from all evils. Every man has naturally occurring evil built inside of them. It is our duty as being man, to secure that evil. The Holocaust is an example of what can become if that evil is unleashed. Man has to be aware of his, and the evil of others. If, however, evil is kept left alone, it may become stronger and more powerful. A person is not judged by their surroundings, but by the evil of its enemies. Man must learn to tolerate and respect those who differ. To do this we must avoid discrimination. Jews were discriminated because of their religious beliefs, appearance, and knowledge. Intolerance leads to unwanted hatred and cruelty. Man must steer clear of failing to care about the pain of others. When one dodges this action, he uproots cruelty. Cruelty shows proof of one being fulfilled with hatred. Hate was the cause of world destruction for Jews and other faultless victims. Hitler loathed Jews and because of this, he sought them out to be scapegoats. Although Adolf Hitl... ...truction, and becoming a follower. I personally pray that all people, the world, become aware of our own negativity before it gets out of control. The hatred and violent crimes has to be ceased. As learned from the Holocaust, it only takes the hatred of one to commit to disaster. I also believe that for some, such as Hitler, their say is the only say. In my opinion, man is not born evil or good, he simply adjusts to his society.

Benazir Bhutto , 1953-2007, prime minister of Pakistan (1988-90; 1993-96), daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto . Educated at Radcliffe and Oxford, she returned to Pakistan shortly before her father was overthrown by General Zia ul-Haq in 1977. Under detention and then in exile, she returned in 1986 to lead the Pakistan People's party (PPP) and to fight military rule. In Nov. , 1988, three months after President Zia ul-Haq died in a plane crash, Bhutto's alliance gained a narrow majority in parliamentary elections, and she became prime minister, the first female leader of a Muslim nation.Her government, marked by continuous intrigue and able to accomplish little, was dismissed by President Gulam Ishaq Khan in Aug. , 1990. He accused her, her husband, Asif Ali Zadari, and her party of corruption. Zadari was held (1990-93) on various charges, although eventually acquitted, and the PPP lost the late 1990 elections. In 1993, Bhutto again became prime minister. By then a more seasoned politici an, she made alliances, including with the military, that enabled her to deal with some of Pakistan's deep-seated problems.In Nov. , 1996, though, her government was again dismissed. Zadari was accused of murdering Bhutto's brother, a political rival, as well as of accepting kickbacks, and was imprisoned; sweeping corruption charges were brought against Bhutto. In 1999, Bhutto and Zadari were both convicted of corruption; Bhutto appealed the verdict while living in exile in England and the United Arab Emirates.In 2001 the Pakistani supreme court set aside the corruption charges facing Bhutto and Zadari and ordered their retrial, but a Swiss court convicted the couple of money laundering in 2003. Bhutto was barred from running in the 2002 Pakistani parliamentary elections. Zadari was released from prison in 2004, a move that appeared designed to improve the Musharraf government's relations with the PPP; he subsequently left Pakistan. In Oct. 2007, after extended negotiations with the government, Bhutto returned to Pakistan, intending to run for prime minister in the scheduled Jan. , 2008 elections. On her return, she survived an attempt on her life that killed more than 130 persons, but was assassinated two months later in an attack, widely ascribed to Islamic militants, that followed a political rally in Rawalpindi. Her 19-year-old son, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, assisted by her husband, succeeded her as PPP leader.

By extension, a gambit is a ploy intended to gain an advantage, especially at the beginning of a contest or negotiation. As a musical term, a gamut is the full range of notes that a voice or instrument can produce. Figuratively, a gamut is the full range or scope of something. Ex. His handyman skills run the gamut from carpentry to plumbing. 2. genial / congenial Both of these adjectives derive from the same source. Used to describe a person, genial means cheerful, kindly, affable. Applied to a thing, like weather, genial means mild or pleasant. In reference to people, congenial connotes a character agreeable to oneââ¬â¢s taste or liking. For example, a congenial friend has similar likes and dislikes. A congenial host anticipates the needs and likes of guests. Applied to things, congenial means suited to oneââ¬â¢s temperament. For example, a congenial job for a bookish person might be one involving research. 3. gibe / jibe Both words are pronounced the same, and both can be used as either a noun or a verb. As a noun, a gibe is an insult or sneering comment. As a verb, to gibe is ââ¬Å"to taunt or insult.â⬠Both the OED and Merriam-Webster recognize jibe as a variant spelling of gibe, when used in the context of insulting. However, because jibe also means ââ¬Å"to agree,â⬠many writers to use the spelling jibe only in the context of agreement: When the witnesses were interviewed separately, their stories jibed. When the accountant went over the books, he found that the figures did not jibe with the previous report. 4. give / gift Conservative speakers (like me) shudder to hear both these words used as verbs. Give is a verb. Friends give gifts to one another. Alumni give donations to colleges. For most modern speakers, gift is a noun, something given, a possession transferred to another without the expectation of an equivalent. The use of gift as a verb is not new in English. The OED shows citations dated from 1500 to the 1880s. However, this usage dropped out of general use so long ago that its revival strikes modern ears as barbarous and pompous. I suppose a huge donation to a university might warrant a bit of pomposity: ââ¬Å"The corporation gifted the university with a million dollars.â⬠For ordinary purposes, however, itââ¬â¢s still more idiomatic to give presents and not ââ¬Å"giftâ⬠people with them. 5. grisly / grizzly The adjective grisly refers to something that inspires great horror. The word is thought to derive from a verb meaning ââ¬Å"to shudder with horror,â⬠or ââ¬Å"to be filled with dread.â⬠The adjective grizzly comes from a word meaning ââ¬Å"gray or grayish.â⬠A beard could be described as grizzly, but in current speech, the participle grizzled is more common in the context of things that are gray. Although grizzly bears range in color from very light tan (almost white) to darkà brown, they apparently acquired their name from explorers who saw grayish specimens. One English explorer described the huge bear that he encountered as ââ¬Å"neither white nor black, but silver-haired like our English rabbit.â⬠Another wrote that heââ¬â¢d seen ââ¬Å"the skin of an enormous grizzled bear.â⬠A grizzly bear rushing toward an unwary camper would be a grisly sight. 6. hanged / hung Whenà hangà means, ââ¬Å"to execute by suspending a person by the neck,â⬠the preferred forms areà hang, hanged,à (has) hanged. For example: ââ¬Å"The murderer was sentenced to be hanged by the neck until dead.â⬠When hang refers to suspending an inanimate object or a person without intent to execute, the forms are hang,à hung,à (has) hung. For example: ââ¬Å"The housekeeper hung the laundry in the garden.â⬠7. historic / historical The prevailing meaning of historic in modern English is ââ¬Å"having or likely to have great historical importance or fame. For example, ââ¬Å"The historic voyage of H.M.S. Beagle commenced on the morning of 27 December 1831.â⬠Historical means, ââ¬Å"concerned with past events.â⬠It is also used to contrast events that actually happened with fiction or legend: ââ¬Å"Although fictionalized, the novel is based on well researched historical events.â⬠8. hoard / horde The word hoard is used as both noun and verb. As a noun, a hoard is an accumulation of something valuable to the hoarder. As a verb, to hoard is ââ¬Å"to put away something of value for preservation or future use.â⬠The verb usually has a negative connotation, implying that the person doing the hoarding is being selfish (in the context of scarcity) or has a disorder (in the context of an inability to part with unneeded possessions). The noun horde originally referred to a tribe of Asiatic nomads. Now it can also mean a large gathering of people or animals. The word usually bears a connotation of ferocity: The child fled from a horde of angry geese. 9. home / hone The confusion associated with these words occurs when home is used as a phrasal verb with the particle in. To home in is ââ¬Å"to come closer and closer to a destination.â⬠A fighter pilot homes in on a target. A detective homes in on a suspect. To hone is ââ¬Å"to sharpen.â⬠One hones a blade to a sharp edge. Iââ¬â¢ve read defenses of ââ¬Å"hone inâ⬠as the equivalent of ââ¬Å"home in,â⬠but careful writers distinguish between the two. 10. hurdle / hurtle As a noun, a hurdle is an obstacle. As a verb, to hurdle is ââ¬Å"to jump over an obstacle.â⬠It is often used figuratively: Kornblut describes the roadblocks all femaleà candidates must hurdle as ââ¬Å"hair, hemlines and husbands.â⬠Hurtle is a verb. Grammar Tips Adjectives and Adverbs Grammar Tips: Adjectives and Adverbs When we want to add extra descriptive detail to a sentence, we use adjectives and adverbs. These are words that modify other words or clauses in a statement. But thereââ¬â¢s an important distinction between adjectives and adverbs, which is crucial to understand if you want to make sure your writing is grammatically correct. In the following, we explain how each of these word types should be used. Adjectives (Modifying Nouns) Adjectives are mostly used to modify nouns and pronouns, usually to tell us something about the properties or character of an object, concept or person. This can be useful for identifying a specific individual. For instance, the adjective ââ¬Å"sadâ⬠can be combined with the noun ââ¬Å"clownâ⬠to make the noun phrase ââ¬Å"sad clown.â⬠This would make the clown in question distinct from a ââ¬Å"happy clown.â⬠Life is hard when your emotions depend on your makeup. Different adjectives are used to describe different qualities, including: Size and shape (e.g., ââ¬Å"sharkââ¬â¢s teeth are small and triangularâ⬠) Color (e.g., ââ¬Å"the red skyâ⬠) Texture (e.g., ââ¬Å"a fuzzy kittenâ⬠) Taste (e.g., ââ¬Å"a minty flavorâ⬠) Sound (e.g., ââ¬Å"a deafening explosionâ⬠) Age and time (e.g., ââ¬Å"the old man gave a lengthy speechâ⬠) Emotions and character (e.g., ââ¬Å"she was pleased with the resultâ⬠) Quantity (e.g., ââ¬Å"many peopleâ⬠) The key thing is that adjectives name an attribute of a noun. Adverbs (Modifying Action) A verb is an action word. To show how an action was performed, we use adverbs. For example, to describe the speed that something happened, we could use an adverb like ââ¬Å"quicklyâ⬠or ââ¬Å"slowlyâ⬠: Put the gun down slowly and raise your hands! Should I raise them quickly or slowly? Some adverbs can also be used to modify an adjective and add extra detail. In the following sentence, for instance, the adverb ââ¬Å"trulyâ⬠is used to emphasize to the adjective ââ¬Å"terribleâ⬠: I feel truly terrible about the incident with the gun. In addition, adverbs can modify other adverbs. The adverb ââ¬Å"more,â⬠for example, can be used to show the degree to which another adverb (e.g., ââ¬Å"sincerelyâ⬠) applies: You need to apologize more sincerely than that! Itââ¬â¢s often easy to spot an adverb because many end in ââ¬Å"-ly.â⬠But this isnââ¬â¢t always the case, such as with ââ¬Å"moreâ⬠or ââ¬Å"very,â⬠and not every word that ends ââ¬Å"-lyâ⬠is an adverb, so you should be careful when using this guideline. Forming Adverbs from Adjectives Many adverbs are formed by adding ââ¬Å"-lyâ⬠to the end of an existing adjective (or replacing the ââ¬Å"-yâ⬠with ââ¬Å"-ilyâ⬠if the adjective already ends in a ââ¬Å"yâ⬠).
